Where family photography meets business branding

One spring day in 2015, I got an email from a woman explaining that she and her business partner were in the process of launching a girls’ clothing company designed to give girls more options in colors and patterns than the standard butterflies and bows typical of little girls clothes - they had trains and ninjas and STEM themes in mind. Today it seems totally normal that we’ve got gender neutral kids clothes, and options for all children that better reflect their loves and interests - but six years ago, this was still not widespread, and this fledgling company, calling themselves Princess Awesome, were on the leading edge of the trend.

They were looking for a photographer with a knack for natural, authentic photography of children. They loved the look of my work and wanted to hire me for their inaugural photo shoot. I was 100% on board with all of this. We had our first shoot that summer, and I’m proud to say they’ve never hired another photographer since!

For the past six years, and more than 50 different shoots, the addition of a second brand (Boy Wonder), dozens of children and parents, the addition of adult clothing, and literally thousands of photographs, well — we’ve grown up together. I’m immensely proud of the commercial photography I get to create with Princess Awesome.

Here’s a look at some of my favorite photos from our many product shoots!
